August 21 - the day of discovery of the first kimberlite pipe
On this day, in 1954, geologist Larisa Anatolyevna Popugaeva (Grintsevich) (1923-1977) and laboratory worker Fyodor Alekseevich Belikov (1913-1995) as part of party No. 26 of the VSEGEI Central Expedition on the watershed of the Shestopalovka (now Dyakha) and Zagadochny streams (Daldyn river basin), using the method of schlich search along the “pyrope-picroilmenite trace”, they found the first in the USSR primary occurrence of diamond-bearing kimberlite rocks (diatreme, “pipe”), which later received the name “Zarnitsa”. 16 years later (in 1970) L.A.Popugayeva was awarded the diploma "Pioneer of the field". In 1998 (44 years later) the industrial development of the Zarnitsa deposit began.
