Is it necessary to dismantle the stones for examination?

Conducting a gemological examination does not necessarily require removing the stone from the jewelry. Expert evaluation can be carried out both for loose stones and for those already fixed in the jewelry. However, it is necessary to take into account a number of factors that can affect the accuracy and completeness of the study.
First of all, the type of setting plays a key role. The more metal covers the stone, the more difficult it is to accurately assess its characteristics. "Blind" settings that hide most of the stone can lead to errors in determining the color, clarity and other parameters. This is especially important to consider when evaluating diamonds and other precious stones with high accuracy requirements.
It is worth understanding that the evaluation of a stone in the product and outside it may differ. For example, with a prong setting of a diamond, the difference in the evaluation can reach one position in color or clarity. This is due to the fact that the metal of the frame can affect the perception of the color and transparency of the stone.
In most cases, it is possible to determine the natural origin of a stone, even if it is in a product. However, there are exceptions. For example, establishing the origin of a flawless amethyst or citrine, the optical axis of which is hidden by the setting, can be difficult. A similar situation arises with low-nitrogen diamonds.
Certain restrictions apply to diamonds with high characteristics. The metal of the jewelry can affect the stone, limiting the accuracy of the assessment of its parameters. In such cases, it is recommended to contact a jeweler to temporarily remove the stone from the frame to ensure the most accurate and objective examination.
