Old mine cut - old miner's cut

The term "Old mine cut" refers to cuts that are close to the "cushion" (cushion) or "circle" shape, referring to the wedge-shaped (diamond) type of cuts. The prototype of this cut is a derivative of the "French Cut" cut. It consists of 16 facets on the crown and a platform at the top, and 16 facets and a culet on the pavilion below.
Originally, the Old Mine Cut was named Brilliant en seize for the number of wedge-shaped facets on the crown, or Lisbon Cut. However, in connection with the prevailing legend about the development of cutting by order of the Cardinal of France Giulio Mazarin (Jules Mazarin, 1602-1661) in the period of the XIX-XX centuries. the name “Mazarin Cut” was assigned to this type of cut. Subsequently, as a result of the complication of the Brilliant en seize cut at the end of the 17th century. Venice-based cutter Vincent Peruzzi developed a new type of brilliant cut, named in France "Brilliant en trente-deux", also named for the number of wedge-shaped facets of the crown. In the late XIX - early XX centuries. the name "Old mine cut" or "Peruzzi cut" was assigned to this type of cut. Until the end of the 19th century, this type of cutting remained preferable, until, as a result of the technical revolution and the introduction of steam engines, new cutting and polishing equipment was developed, which made it possible to cut stones with an almost perfectly round contour and provide a more symmetrical arrangement of edges on the surface of the stone with an exact certain angles of inclination. New cuts of diamonds received the name "New" ("Modern"), "Ideal" ("Ideal"), which made them stand out from the general range of the "old" cut. Professional cutters and polishing enterprises quickly switched to new expensive equipment, and the production of the traditional type of cut with low symmetry became the lot of handicraft production - hence the modern name of the cut "Old minе cut" used in gemological practice.

Currently, gemstones are produced by two fundamentally different technological methods - the High Pressure - High Temperature method (“HPHT”, High-pressure & High-temperature) and the Chemical Vapor Deposition (“CVD”, Chemical vapor deposition) method. The "HPHT" method is the most tested classical synthesis method, which can be used both carbon deposition on diamond from flux melts and catalytic reactions. In "CVD" synthesis, diamond growth occurs on a seed during carbon deposition mainly from a gaseous medium at relatively low temperatures and pressures.

Jewelry and precious stones are just such a category of goods, when buying which you need to pay attention to many criteria.

Sogdianite is a rather rare mineral and more often it can be found as a collection material (moreover, in systematic collections), and it is extremely rare in jewelry.
