Sapphire padparadscha
The padparadscha sapphire is the most expensive variety of the mineral corundum. It is characterized by pinkish-orange color. Padparadscha sapphires with the natural colouring is quite rare and their price can reach several thousand dollars per carat. The most common on the market are sapphires with pink-orange color, obtained by ennobling the stone, including the method of beryllium diffusion. This method is a surface staining of the stone by penetration of ions, giving a particular color.
Diagnosis of beryllium diffusion in sapphire padparadscha possible immersion method (sometimes) or by using mass spectroscopy by partial destruction of the stone (laser a sample surface).
