Tanzanite Why is the bulk of these stones ennobled?
As usual, start with the definition. So, tanzanite is called a jewelry variety of the mineral zoisite, aluminum silicate and calcium. It was opened in the middle of the 20th century in Tanzania and, due to the color similarity, was first mistaken for sapphire, but it was further established that this conclusion was erroneous. However, it was a color similar to the color of sapphire that influenced the popularity of the stone. For the first time in jewelry, tanzanite began to be used by the Tiffany company, which subsequently brought him worldwide fame.
But it should be noted that tanzanite by nature does not have such a bright blue-violet color. The usually mined samples are gray-blue and often with a brown tint. The stones acquire a recognizable color only after refining by heat treatment. Tanzanites are heated to a temperature of 400-500 degrees, which is enough to make unwanted brown tones disappear, and the blue color becomes deeper. This refinement method is quite persistent, so do not be afraid that the stone will lose its color over time.
In connection with all of the above, when buying a product with such a stone as tanzanite, do not be afraid of the term "heated" or "ennobled."
