History of stone mosaics (part 3)

Appearing in the second half of the 18th century and gaining the greatest popularity in the 19th century, micromosaics, made in the style of Roman mosaics. By the middle of the 19th century, they had already begun to be used in the production of jewelry. The greatest contributions to the art of jewelry micromosaic were made by Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1836), Fortunato Castellani (1794-1865) and Carlo Giuliano (1831-1895), who became true classics of this art form. Jewelry "Roman" micromosaic originates in the art of classical Roman mosaic, which received its rebirth in the late 16th - mid-17th centuries, in connection with the reconstruction of St. Peter's Cathedral. In this connection, in 1727, the Vatican Mosaic Workshop was established in the Vatican. Unlike the original "Roman mosaic", the new artistic mosaic did not use stones and glass, but specially made colored glass - "smalt", in the form of small pieces - "tesser". Plots of jewelry micromosaic touched not only on classical Roman and Greek antique themes, but also biblical, Egyptian and Babylonian motifs. In the late XX - early XIX centuries in Russia in the style of "Roman" micromosaic from natural "hard" stone worked masters of the creative group "Vikart", founded by talented artists - Viktor Kuzmishchev and his sister Elena. At different times, the group was attended by such artists as Belyakova Ella, Zharkov Vladimir, Koroleva Valeria, Leikin Alexey and Galina, Popovich Vladimir, Trifonov Mikhail and others. The works were performed not only in the form of flat, but also unique in the performance of volumetric compositions. Unfortunately, after Victor's death in 2005, the creative team disintegrated, and the traditions of the created style of volumetric “Roman” micromosaic made of natural “hard” stone have sunk into oblivion. Nevertheless, the works of the creative group "Vikart" remain a unique manifestation of the Moscow "school" of stone-cutters and have received well-deserved recognition from experts in stone-cutting art all over the world.

Currently, gemstones are produced by two fundamentally different technological methods - the High Pressure - High Temperature method (“HPHT”, High-pressure & High-temperature) and the Chemical Vapor Deposition (“CVD”, Chemical vapor deposition) method. The "HPHT" method is the most tested classical synthesis method, which can be used both carbon deposition on diamond from flux melts and catalytic reactions. In "CVD" synthesis, diamond growth occurs on a seed during carbon deposition mainly from a gaseous medium at relatively low temperatures and pressures.

Sogdianite is a rather rare mineral and more often it can be found as a collection material (moreover, in systematic collections), and it is extremely rare in jewelry.
